When is the Escalade 2026?

The festival run by the Compagnie de 1602 takes place from Friday 11 to Sunday 13 December 2026 in the Old Town. For three days the Compagnie recreates Genevan life in the early 17th century: costumes, soldiers, parades and songs. With more than 2,000 members, it’s the largest historical society in Switzerland.

Why does Geneva celebrate the Escalade?

On the night of 11 to 12 December 1602, the troops of Charles Emmanuel I, Duke of Savoy, tried to take Geneva by surprise by scaling its walls. The alarm was raised, the Genevans fought back and drove them off. Eighteen Genevans died. The song “Cé qu’è lainô” comes from that night, and so does the chocolate marmite families smash together. Since 2018 the festivities have been on Switzerland’s list of living traditions.

The Course de l’Escalade 2026

A week before, on 5 and 6 December 2026, the Course de l’Escalade holds its 48th edition in the Old Town. It’s the most popular running race in Switzerland, and the fancy-dress categories are worth watching, mulled wine in hand.

Where to go out afterwards?

After the parade, Geneva’s nightlife takes over. Check our weekend listings and the Geneva agenda, where the 11 and 12 December nights get added as they’re announced. To warm up first, the Christmas markets are right nearby.
